The term ‘cinematic lighting’ gets sorely overused today, but what actually is cinematic lighting? I’ve spent a long time working on my latest course, but after a ton of research and development I’ve put together a series of techniques and setups that although commonly used on film sets, they are rarely, if ever, used by photographers.
As portrait photographers we spent most of our time lighting the subject and the background comes a distant second in terms of importance. In cinema, the background and scene plays a far bigger role in the image and they often choose to beautifully light the scene whilst allowing the subject to exist effortlessly within it. On this course I go over how we can do that convincingly in the studio as I share ways to turn any space, even a home studio, into a mini movie set.
